 Almost correct. But there are tools available for managing NIS*
environments.

 Changing that variable is the answer to your first question, it won't affect the 
behaviour of Admintool. Try using the NIS/NIS+ aware version of Admintool
which is a part of the Solstice AdminSuite application.
