The OpenWindows server has no problem running against many framebuffers
with many different color depths.
My old SS2 had at one point a bwtwo (1bpp), a cgsix (8bpp) and a GT
(24bpp) running 3-headed with the stock Solaris 2.4 OpenWindows X server.
I never had a single issue with color depths.
Provided you're not trying to merge multiple physical displays into a
single logical display (such as with Xvan or Xinerama) there is no
requirement that the displays share any common attributes.
I found it incredibly useful at the time. The GT was pretty but miserably
slow for interactive work. The bwtwo was clean and sharp on a crisp ECL
mono monitor and perfect for code. The cgsix was a good compromise for
things in the middle.
