[SunHELP] X11R6.5 under SunOS 4.1.4?

To all,

At home I am running SunOS 4.1.4 (GENERIC kernal) on an old SPARC IPC
with a CG3 framebuffer. I would like to use some of the newer X
programs available and thus need to upgrade from the X11R4 stuff
OpenWindows 3.0 is based on. I went for broke and got X11R6.5 from
ftp.x.org, and successfully compiled and installed it using gcc 2.7.2,
and the make and install that came with the OS (the X install doc said
NOT to use gmake).

Now when I try to start the new X server (I use xinit, and set
LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /home/X11R6.5/lib:/usr/lib) I get:

X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)

on the terminal after a few moments - the screen never even twitches to
indicate that the server is successful in doing anything with it. I've
tried starting it with and without a .xinitrc, and setting XDEVICE or
explicitly passing the device to Xsun. Same result. An 'Xsun -fbinfo'
says that it is trying to use /dev/cgthree0.

Has anyone any suggestions for me? Has anyone out there gotten X11R6.5
to run under 4.1.4? If it just doesn't work, what version of X do you
suggest that I use?

Please cc my e-mail address in case I somehow miss a response on the
list...

Many thanks!

Michael
