Ah, IDE.

See if you can find in the data sheets for the drive if it is capable of
doing write-back caching, and if it is enabled.  Some IDE drives will do
this transparently and if so no amount of sync metadata commits will help
(as the OS sees the write "committed" to disk immediately).
