Well, now that you mention it, I'm playing with the Ray's right now. Sun
rep was here yesterday, although he didn't manage to get them set up.
Right now, inital tests are running 2 Ray's from an hme0 (100BT) interface
on a Ultra 2, and another hme0 interface going out of the Ultra2 as a
gateway.
I'll let you know how it's running when we finally get off the ground (had a
network issue yesterday).
Now as I understand it, here's my take on the Ray's:
The Sun Ray is a Java terminal which is in essence a hybrid X-Term. It uses
DHCP for address allocation, and functions on a seperate network allocated
specifically for the Ray's. From what I can gather on it, it requires the
Sun that's feeding the data to the Ray's to additionally act as a gateway.
The Ray network uses compressed data communication between the primary
server and the terminals.
This is everything I know about them so far. As for the pricing, I was
talking with the Sun rep yesterday, and according to what he was telling me,
the more Ray's you buy, the cheaper they get. He had one customer buy 100
of them and they paid something like $250 a piece. Also, when you buy
hardware, they'll likely throw in some Ray's if you ask them. Takes a
little heckling as with anything, but it's sales per usual.
Also, another little tidbit I got that you guys will be interested in, is
Sun will discontinue the Ultra2 later this year. That's right folks, sbus
will be going away, in favor of a new type (although I don't offhandedly
remember what the new type is called). Additionally, Serengetti is coming
soon. Expect it after the summer. And you WILL be pleased. Got some good
inside on that yesterday. Not sure if it'll be US3 or not, but I guess
we'll see.
