[Sunhelp] compiling probs

I've installed gcc from sunfreeware on my system with Solaris 2.6.  I often
get errors of one sort or another about a missing library or one of the
missing programs like ar etc.  I tracked down the programs like lex and ar
in /usr/ccs/bin and have added it to the path.  I've also added some lib and
include directories to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable.  Aside from
that I still get a lot of problems with imake/xmkmf and general compiling
stuff.  Can anyone give a good rundown (or pointer thereto) of how to get
gcc working well under Solaris?  A checklist format would be just peachy :-)
