Hmmm.... I think I completely misunderstood how this thing goes together.
I just assumed that the IBM drive that was in there was just thicker than
the (much newer) toshiba drive.  On closer examination it looks like the
converter actually sits _underneath_ the dirve, and the IDE jumper blocks
are attached at the _rear_.

I cannot see any obvious means of detaching the two though, and don't want
to #!%@ it up.  Does it just pop out with a bit of pressure (casual tugging
didn't seem to budge anything), or does it take a screwdriver somewhere?
It looks like I might be able to take off the circuit board, and get at the 
screws underneath, but...
