Windows is a target for virus writers because (to borrow a line from the early
Java days) it's 'write once, run almost anywhere' because of marketshare.

That it is easier to write a virus against Windows is beyond question, but if
windows were better engineered, virus writers would still target it - they
would just have to work harder at it.

A virus that is only successful 1 time out of ten still captures more desktops
than a virus that captures EVERY OS X desktop. A virus that only captures one
desktop out if one hundred captures more desktops than one that targets EVERY
Linux desktop.

No matter how well the the OS is designed, the weakest point is the person
working the mouse - social engineering trumps OS engineering, and the most
secure OS can be compromised by an easily-duped user.
