Ah yes, good point. I have a Blade 2000 and the fan noise isn't too bad
although it's been a while since I had it powered on. I'm not sure if the
open source OSes have proper fan management control - I vaguely remember
that NetBSD 5.x didn't but perhaps things have improved since then.

The Ultra 45 has also been suggested and that looks like a perfect fit for
my needs (particularly as it has SAS, making SSD usage easy). Prices are
still pretty high though - they're currently going for #600+ on eBay.
