The cloners were earning a pitiful fraction of DEC's profit margin, and 
DEC's core customer base actually *liked* VMS and RSX-11M and so on.

DEC's move towards UNIX never made sense. Any success for DEC UNIX 
cannibalized more profitable products.  Failures tarnished the brand. 
The company was never able to resolve the conflict of interest.
