I choose Linux over Solaris and Intel over Sparc.
Years ago, it was apparent that Scott McNeally was going to run Sun
Microsystems into the ground--and he did.  He let go of the reins too late
for Sun to survive.  He also turned over a considerable amount of "say" and
influence to Fujitsu--too much from my perspective.
Linux has a better support model (than Sun had before Oracle); the Linux
community has a growing number of support sites and Red Hat (the version I
use at $WORK) is cheaper.
Sun support sites are dwindling and Oracle "screwed the pouch" when it took
over Sun support.
Linux is yet to develop a "registry" like Sun implemented in Solaris
10--that's another plus for Linux.
