Oh, I've been down that road.  

I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my Toshiba Portege R-100, itself an
amusing undertaking since you have to boot from both PCMCIA and USB at the
same time.  Once I installed UNR, the screen display was about half-size.
Extensive Googling led me to a page that included an xorg.conf that fixed
the problem after some additional fiddling.  The WiFi was flake city, even
after much Googling found some suggested driver substitutions.  No driver
for the SD card slot at all.  Yada, as they say, yada yada.

I installed Ubuntu Server 8.04 on a very plain-Jane Dell box. All drivers
present and accounted for, but finding out how to set up a RAID without a
GUI required Jedi-level Googling and not just a little imagination.  

I'm non-discriminitory, though.  I've had to Google up lots of answers for
every OS I've used; back in the day I'd ask on the appropriate CompuServe
Forum or UseNet newsfroup.  Nowadays, the method of finding the answers is
sometimes different, but answers are still required.
