RS/6000 systems define their console in a firmware setting,
manipulated by an AIX command 'chcons'.

If the system was defined with the graphics console, no amount of
plugging in or unplugging a keyboard and monitor will change it to the
serial port, and vice versa.

The other piece of "magic" is that AIX will not, by default, display a
login banner on a serial terminal without working hardware flow
control. A three-wire (or even five-wire) serial cable is not going to
cut it.

Booting the install media in service mode will display a prompt on all
configured devices capable of serving as a console, to configure that
device as the console _for the purposes of installing AIX or
performing maintenance from the miniroot shell_. You can, however, use
this to get access to 'chcons' in order to change the console on an
already-installed AIX system.
