They don't.

NCR bought AT&T's UNIX group along with the product (UNIX).

Novel bought NCR's UNIX group.

Caldera (a Linux vendor) bought something from Novel, which included the 
use of the trademarks UNIX and SCO. *

Caldera changed their name to SCO.

While SCO (the renamed Caldera) was suing Linux users for violating the
AT&T patents, they were still allowing free unrestriced download of
Caldera Linux from their website.

  It seems that whatever they actually bought, Caldera thought it was much more
