My preference is probably for the Xyplex MaxServer 1600 series.  They're 
fairly small, low-power, and I've got them both running at home and 
work (they seem to last almost forever; the last failure we had on one 
at work I think was a bad tantalum cap, which was easy to fix).  You 
don't really need the card in them either, they boot off of tftp or MOP 
just fine.  (And depending on the software version you have, you may 
not be able to use the flash card on the 1600 either, unlike the 
1620/1640/etc).

DECservers are nice too, but probably more expensive, and for most (but 
not all) of the models, you're limited to using LAT/reverse LAT on 
them.  Still, I've had a DECserver 500 running with conserver and Linux 
decnet tools, and it worked just fine.
