I decided to stick with Solaris 8 on that machine (it's for testing
anyway), and was able to patch the firmware on the controller and
apply a patch update from Sun as well. Because it's just a test box,
I made a RAID 0 with 8x18G 10,000RPM disks. Two days of pounding and
it was still fine, so I'm comfortable with it in the current setup.

Actually, with that setup, an 18G 10K boot disk, a 9G dedicated swap
disk, 4G of RAM, and 4x400MHz/4M CPUs, it screams. I'd almost
forgotten how "light" Solaris 8 is. (But I haven't forgotten how
robust - my personal best uptime is with a Sol 8 box - just under
1000 days, and the killer was a 5-hour power outage that drained the
UPS it was on.)
