OTOH, if you have a bunch of 10Mb only equipment and already have the
10Mb switch in addition to a GigE switch, then why not use 10Mb as well
for extra ports.

I'm thinking that in the near future I will be hanging a 10Mb switch off
of a FDDI ring, after the upcoming move.
