I believe the cable that runs to the CD drive is only 8-bits wide, so
don't spend any more money on a 16-bit drive than you would on an 8-bit
drive.

I've used a Pioneer SCSI DVD-ROM on my Suns without any problems.  I've
used on my VAXen, for that matter, and they're notoriously picky about
things like that.
