You want to be able to log in via XDM to the remote *nix box?

That can be done, it always takes me a little bit of digging through
/etc/X11/xdm on the remote box, but it is definately possible.

These days I don't bother with that, I just use ssh and X11 forwarding,
the desktop is managed locally, just the graphics for the remote app
needs to be pushed over the wire.

And I do that regardless of which OS is supplying the frame buffer.
