If your employer stupidly hires a systems administrator in whom he does
not have sufficient trust so as to let him support the mail system, your
employer DESERVES to pay $20000 for mail software. If they're willing
to buy a mail system from Microsoft[0] because they just -have- to pay
-somebody- for mail software, well, then they deserve to run a Microsoft
mail system, too.

Put it this way: If the suits micromanage IT policy, only buy software
and hardware with extor^Wsupport contracts, and rely on glossies for
future direction....what's the sysadmin's job again? Oh, right,
changing the toner carts.

I'll admit that not having the source to my mail server is a little
unnerving, but, realistically speaking, I've not needed to hand-hack MTA
code since the bad old days of Sendmail 8.6.

[0] BTW, ever tried to exercise support on a Microsoft product? You
either buy the support calls "up front" and never use them, or you
pay a slightly higher price as-you-need-them. I'm pretty sure that
no Microsoft product comes with free support. The last product I
bought that did was Windows NT 4.0; I got two free tech support
incidents. One of those incidents wound up being a bug in RAS that
I helped discover, but of course it used up one of my "free"
     incidents, anyhow.
