I have an Escalade 8506- which currently has 3 ATA-133 (Samsung 200GB)
attached to it via SATA-IDE converters in a RAID 5 configuration. I'm
somewhat disappointed with the write performance of it, but given the
low cost, I can't really complain all that much.

I should go read up in their KB regarding any non-destructive tuning I
can do. In the meantime, I mitigate it somewhat by splitting my disk
I/O load partially over to the boot mirror (two 200GB Seagates, using
the Promise Lite on the mobo)--I mainly see the problem when
downloading multiple large files or doing a lot of random reads with
sustained writes.
