yeah, but --

the sparc risc cpu architecture - and likewise sgi's mips, dec's
alpha, hp's parisc, and ibm and apple's power - is much more efficient
than intel's x86, so they get a lot more done clock-for-clock.

clock speed has become a marketing tool, because it's so easy to
explain.  didja know that a high-end pIII is more powerful than a
low-end pIV?  they simplified the pIV to make it run faster.

and then there's system speed.  memory bandwidth, i/o bandwidth...
