Nothing concrete. I just seem to have fewer weird problems when using
LPD or IPP than when using tcp/9100. It's possible that it's due to
having two machines trying to print to the same printer simultaneously
... users will insist on using the warm standby machines.

I don't think the speed of the alternatives will make much difference,
or at least won't cause your speed (and other) problems to disappear.

I'd try setting up one Linux or *BSD box to print to all the printers
and have everything else go through it.
