Which version of AIX? It seems that up to 4.3.3, you could get it to a root 
prompt
by just putting it into service mode, and using option 41 - at least it 
worked for a
old 7011-220 (which is an AIX 4 machine itself) I've used. You may have to 
do manual
editing of both of the passwd files, since this option could drop you to a 
prompt that just
mounts the filesystems.
