[rescue] password recovery on a cisco 2820 switch anyone?

hi folks ,

one of my friends was fooling around with this switch and set a password on
it and has left and i dont know the password ..

cisco's site says "turn of switch , hold down mode button , turn on switch
let go of switch after the 1x light goes out , so i do but it still asks for
a
password after it displays its diags banner.."

how do i reset the password?

i dont have a contract with cisco so any help is appreciated.
