I don't think this is a doom & gloom story. After all, the article specifcally notes "The new SGI system's performance will be five times better than its predecessor, while the price-performance ratio will be 40 times better". In other other words the new Onyx4 does more and costs less - what's wrong with that? 

I think the real story here is that ATI and Nvidia have been pursuing an extremely agressive development strategy for the last few years and that this simply shows how far they've come.
