I am only speaking from a larger perspective-if you have one or two or even 100 sun systems it is hard to compare the failure frequencies to other OEM products. There is a reason that the REALLY important stuff that can't ever go down is run on RS/6000 hardware or a couple other OEM's stuff.
 
That patch install scenario is very old-school!  With domains, HA clusters, and processors with "fences" that situation is not really true anymore.

Yes, -=certain=- CPU modules suffer from severe e-cache problems, but
the vast majority of Sun systems (SPARCstation 1 through Exx00 systems)
are rock-solid. Contrast this with our IBM p660 systems with the
exploding power supplies.

Yeah, 148-days of uptime isn't impressive, but you have to install
patches -sometime-.
