[rescue] Grr, audio on a new CD-RW

I just bought a new Philips CD-RW (CDRW 2400) to replace the old philips
drive that died over the weekend. I never got around to moving the old
CD-RW drive over to linux, but I figured I'd start the new one out on
linux, since the linux machine seems more trustworthy.

So, after much work, I have it burning CDs in xcdroast. I'd miscopied a
line in the lilo.conf file turning on scsi emulation was most of the problem.
I also can mount existing CDs, and the CDs I burn work in another
machine.

But, for the life of me, I can't get this drive to read audio CDs. Is
there something non-obvious that people have been forgetting to tell me
about? Can anyone help? Using an additional normal CD-Rom for audio
isn't an option because this machine won't fit anymore CD-ROM sized
drives due to an annoying conflict between the case design and the
motherboard (grr).
