Yes, I think you're right. It will work, but would technically be wrong.
The switch in the middle will act like it's dual homing, the PC will
work properly, and the other switch on the other end will be in the wrap
mode, it will think that there's a break in the dual ring (which there
is), and go into the wrap mode. If you're talking about Lanplex 2500's I
believe you can set them specifically to use the ports either as a dual
ring, or as dual homed, but I'm not 100% sure of the exact commands to
do this.

I just switched over a couple of my machines here from SAS to DAS, both
my U1 and my SS1000 were really easy, just remove the SAS card, replace
it with a DAS card, run the cables properly, and reboot. My U30 is
proving to be the difficult one! I had bought a PT DAS card, but their
Solaris driver is only 32bit, so didn't work, then I installed an SK
card, which has 64bit drivers, but for some reason the install didn't
work (their driver for Sol9 is a beta version), so now I'm going to get
a Sun DAS card, and it should be a direct replacement for the Sun SAS
card currently in the machine, just like the sbus ones were. I also got
a DEC SAS card I'm going to install in my Mac, and I'm going to try
installing the SK card in my PC so that all my machines (other than my
sparcbook, it's ethernet only :( and my printers) will be FDDI.
