You're probably thinking of an A3000. The 3000 control "unit" up top is chained
to multiple D1000 drive "shelves". The 3000 does the hardware RAID.
Okay, rundown:
A1000 = 8 or 12-slot drive "shelf" with hardware RAID controller integrated
D1000 = 8 or 12-slot drive "shelf" with no hardware RAID; its just a JBOD/
enclosure
A3000 = hardware RAID controller connected to multiple D1000s
If I have the time, I'll bring my digicam to work this weekend and take some
pictures of A3000 setups.
