I thought that 486s were Windows NT and SCO machines. The first NT machine
I used was a 486.  We used it to run lightscape to prerender the lighting
(it would radiosity render the lighting, then among other things, could be
told to save the lighing information as part of the model) to get better
looking real time rendering.  It allowed you to do really amazing building
walkthrough type things on a dual SM4? SS10 w/ ZX board.  This was circa 95
or 96.
