Ok. Now I'm confused. I've been following this thread with interest
because I recently acquired an O2 with IRIX 6.5. I was interested in
having the native IRIX C compiler instead of gcc, since gcc can
apparently produce code that doesn't work properly on 6.5 and above.
(There are work arounds, but your mileage may vary.)

Does the IRIX 6.5 CDs come with the compiler itself, or just the
headers and libraries required to get another compiler like gcc
working? My understanding is that the compiler was at one time a
separate package that had to be purchased from SGI, and is not part of
the OS distribution, or did that change with 6.5? (Of course, the OS
is something like 9 CDs, so it could be hidden there too!)

What additional CDs, if any, are required to get the compiler when
starting with the base IRIX 6.5 CDs? What are these overlays that are
mentioned above? Must any of this be purchased from SGI, or can they
be downloaded from somewhere instead? If someone has the requisite
packages, I too would be interested in hearing about it!

Many thanks for help sorting this out!

Mike.
