Apple never called it phonenet. PhoneNET was the hardware implementation of
LocalTalk done by Farallon. It was far superior to the original LocalTalk
cables and connectors which always seemed to pull apart when they were
hidden behind a desk or some other place you couldn't reach. They are now
called Proxim and they still sell them...
