When I was buying license upgrades, I didn't consider it a burden.

I'll just mention that a Tru64 hobbyist/non-commercial license is $99 at
http://www.tru64unix.compaq.com/noncommercial-unix/ (upgrade kit from
non-commercial 5.0/5.0A is $39). I got one when I got my AS600.

Yeah, I agree that it's not too bad. The free ISO downloads make me more
likely to adopt new versions, whether it's Solaris or Debian or FreeBSD,
but I still buy the occasional media kit. Retail pricing on MP-capable
Windows OSes is far higher.
