The Sparc 10/LX speakerbox is not just a dumb speaker. It is a digital
CS4215 mmcodec running off of a serial connection.

The Sparc 10 needs it because it has no onboard mmcodec, the only audio
from the DBRI chipset is digital. The SS20 (and the SS10SX) already has
one onboard, so it doesn't need one in order to have analog audio in/out
(indeed, the SS20/SS10SX already has the analog connectors on the
motherboard).

The speakerbox is a particularly cool gadget, though, pressing the volume
up/down/mute buttons actually communicates a state change to the driver,
which then updates any controlling apps via tooltalk.
