They *read* both, but the Sun 3 tape drives (Archive Scorpion and the
others - Wang?) would only write QIC24 - or at least that's what I
understand.

Nope, 2/50 (plus 2/130 and 2/160) are VME based. Unfortunately, the
NetBSD port information says the only the Multibus Sun 2s are
currently supported....
