I used to have a script on my Indy run by cron at ten pm which started a
loop basically consisting of "if anyone logged in then continue else sleep
300" and then set the wake up time to seven am and shutdown. It made a
perfect alarm clock! =)

There is a package with startup and shutdown sounds from almost all SGIs.
I think I've got it at home somewhere..
