I use Linux + XFree86 3.xx occasionally on a K5-100 (comparable to Tadpole's processor) desktop system with 48M of memory and it is quite tolerable.  I don't try to do a lot of things concurrently.

That generation of notebooks might only have had 640x480 screens.
