Wouldn't it be easier to install one of those power-line modem units to do
RF modulation down the 117V AC?  Or are these things battery powered?

No but I thought about a way to run the accessories on an automobile with
just the power wire and the ground wire.  It's a variation of the AC/RF
modem above - you modulate a digital signal down the positive line at a high
enough frequency that the end items aren't affected. Even if they were you
could put some sort of small filter at the end of each run.  I'm positive
that my wild-eye'd optimism is missing a flaw in this plan but on the
surface at least it sounds good.  You could in theory run a car with one
large central control box, (minus ignition controller), a single power wire
to each remote device, and tiny control boxes at the end of the runs.

Then again I might be insane... ;-)
