Out of curiousity, were these the 3.5" HH model 0661 drives?

If so I'm hardly surprised.  IBM and WD were in bed for a long time, this
was one of their early collaborations.  They still share much in the way
of drive controller electronics.

The 0661 had a rather spectacular failure mode best described as sounding
like a ball bearing being dropped on a glass coffee table, in front of a
PA microphone.
