What did it do if you (say) tried to mirror between a stripe of 3 disks
of size 2X and a stripe of 2 disks of size 3X?

Really, it seems to me that the right answer here is to make RAID 10
its own RAID type - implement it on its own, rather than layering the
RAID 1 and RAID 0 implementations.  This violates conceptual layering
somewhat, but it does improve failure performance in the face of cases
like the above.
