Sounds to me like you need to contact Google customer service and tell
them you got a bum unit.  They're really good about replacements.

I bought an 8G Nexus7 the instant they were available, and use mine
*heavily* (a minimum of an hour a night, sometimes 2-3 hours a day) and
have never had any problems whatsoever.
