There are two PL2303 drivers for OSX.  There are some fairly old 
official drivers.  The .hqx makes me think this is that driver.

In my experience these drivers are much better.  I'm not certain, but I 
think one of the differences is something to do with sending break 
signals.

I will point out that the PL2303 doesn't do breaks entirely correctly 
(something about voltages I think), but breaks that work on many devices 
is better than nothing.
