Because Fleishman and Pons could not produce verifiable results, never published their results in any scientific journals so others could try to duplicate their experiment and were working outside of their area of expertise.  They were chemists, not nuclear physicists.

I had always hoped they were on to something but did not have all of the variables accounted for.    A potential new energy source would be nice.  I wonder if a PR person at U of U caught wind of their "discovery" and leaked it to the press.  Unfortunately, today the pressure is on to produce results and there is more motivation to cheat.  At least, it is easier to spot bogus results in science than is some other fields.
