What you really want is fiber, off a local city ring, direct to your 
location, if you can get it.

THAT is the only way to have inexpensive but high availability bandwidth.

Anything tariffed or delivered over copper may well work, but the 
scumbag ILECs have it set up that they get paid enormous amounts of 
money for basically doing little to no work.

If you are within a mile of metro (not long haul) fiber you are in luck, 
since the fiber company will usually do a buildout for a $3k per month 
or more contract.

According to Level3, they basically divide the cost of the buildout by 
15 to get a minimum monthly amount.  E.g. if it would cost $45K for the 
buildout to reach you, they will want at least a $3K per month contract 
for greater than 15 months (probably 2 to 3 years).

XO.com has a neat product, they can deliver 10Mbps Ethernet for about 
$1100 per month including all loop charges.  If you don't need a full 
DS3 that might be something to look at.
