I am - it seems - using a broken (grin) version of du ..
# du -b *
du: illegal option -- b
usage: du [-a] [-d] [-h|-k] [-r] [-o|-s] [-H|-L] [file ...]

We should be using the gnu utilities but don't. There is a long and
tedious story behind that choice.
