Then you also know that you need to keep your Toyota diesel really
really small, 'cause that AX5 was limited to gasoline 4cyls for a reason.

Liberty is close enough.  The 2008 looks a lot like an XJ.

You could always try to import a European 1993-2001 XJ, or an AMC era XJ
- rare models had a 2.1L Renault diesel.

No, they definitely made '06 Liberty CRDs. They were dropped for '07
after they found out it would be too expensive to make the 2.8L meet
emissions. Word has it the engine will return for '08 after some
re-engineering - quite a few diesels are being re-engineered or replaced
at the moment.  The Cummins is up to 6.7L, the Powerstroke is up to
6.4L, the VW TDI 1.9L is being replaced with a CRD 2.0L, etc.

They're going to keep using VM engines, there's nothing wrong with them
and I suspect they have a contract with them like they do with Cummins.
