Also, there were more colonies than historical information indicates.

Even locally, in colonial Virginia, there are sites that aren't
documented, or are only barely documented. For example, there isn't much
information on York River sites, even though quite a few fishing and
oyster colonies were established there.

I suppose most small colonies weren't significant enough to warrant much
attention.

I would guess that there were dozens of colonies and other ventures at
any one time.

Also, history has a tendency to record winners, or spectacular losers.
