Here are two screenshots of Open Office running on vanilla fvwm, and again
while running KDE. This is just to give an example of how some apps render
poorly when not running under KDE or Gnome.

Font scaling, widgets, and coloring are all different without KDE
loaded.  

The widgets... understanable since it didn't load whatever it needed in the
vanilla setup, but the widgets are also drawn too small, and so are the fonts.
It's like it scales smaller for some reason.

Firefox is fine either way, so this is probably an example of a broken app or
GUI abstraction layer.

But since I do have to use programs like OO for work, it is annoying.
