So far they all are pretty bizarre, and most of the layout changes seem
arbitrary.

Personally, my design would never win, but here it is:

The IBM Model M layout with capslock permanently removed and a full
sized control key in its place.  Everything else about the keyboard is
perfect.

Alternative layouts:

Function keys on the left version
Windows/Mac key versions
A version with more function keys for macro junkies

Really, I love this keyboard except for the dumbass capslock position
and horrible design of the key itself.

Aside:

Has anyone every found a replacement for capslock on the Model M that is
full size so you can do away with the annoying notch in capslock?
